The sport and culture of track cycling

Easier to make friends/meet a potential significant other at a road race or a track meet?

This is a great discussion topic that Warren G. from Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose just sent. Here in San Jose we have great weather already, so much of that time on a Saturday and/or Sunday are spent lounging on the field and chatting with friends, watching and cheering the next group of riders in their event, or with new riders who stop in to the Saturday morning beginning sessions held every (yes that's right, year round) Saturday from 8:30 - 12:30. Since we're in a State Park, there are also a handful of folks who wander by out of curiosity and stand watching for a while before returning to their walk or picnic. I've been incredibly impressed with how receptive to newbies the track crowd (both male and female) is here, and there are countless opportunities to join a conversation and meet new folks. Road events always struck me as a little more intimidating, but also there's the nature of that side of the sport being that of changing in one's car, negotiating the crowd to get signed in, etc., etc. So my vote goes to the track scene as much more social and friendly. What do others think?
